Communications Minister Shozo Murata designated the holiday in 1942 to commemorate the Meiji Emperor and his 1876 voyage in the Meiji-Maru, an iron steamship constructed in England in 1874. The voyage included a trip around the Ou district, embarking on a lighthouse boat in\u00a0<a title=\"Aomori, Aomori\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aomori,_Aomori\">Aomori<\/a>, and a brief stop in\u00a0<a title=\"Hakodate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hakodate\">Hakodate<\/a>\u00a0before returning to\u00a0<a title=\"Yokohama\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yokohama\">Yokohama<\/a>\u00a0on July 20 of that year. &#8220;Marine Day&#8221; was declared a national holiday in 1995 as a day of gratitude for the\u00a0<a title=\"Blessing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blessing\">blessings<\/a>\u00a0of the oceans and to hope for the economic prosperity of\u00a0<a title=\"Sea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sea\">maritime<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Japan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japan\">Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First observed on July 20, 1996, the\u00a0<a title=\"Happy Monday System\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Happy_Monday_System\">Happy Monday System<\/a>\u00a0(\u30cf\u30c3\u30d4\u30fc\u30de\u30f3\u30c7\u30fc\u5236\u5ea6\u00a0<em>Happ\u012b Mand\u0113 Seido<\/em>)\u00a0legislation moved the date from July 20 to the third Monday of July from 2003.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The day was known as Marine Memorial Day (\u6d77\u306e\u8a18\u5ff5\u65e5 umi no kinen bi) until 1996.
