This Buddhist-Confucian custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors&#8217; graves, and when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars. It has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori.<\/p>\n<p>The festival of Obon lasts for three days; however its starting date varies within different regions of Japan. When the\u00a0<a title=\"Lunar calendar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lunar_calendar\">lunar calendar<\/a>\u00a0was changed to the\u00a0<a title=\"Gregorian calendar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gregorian_calendar\">Gregorian calendar<\/a>\u00a0at the beginning of the\u00a0<a title=\"Meiji era\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meiji_era\">Meiji era<\/a>, the localities in Japan reacted differently and this resulted in three different times of Obon. &#8220;Shichigatsu Bon&#8221; (Bon in July) is based on the solar calendar and is celebrated around 15 July in eastern Japan (<a title=\"Kant\u014d region\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kant%C5%8D_region\">Kant\u014d region<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a title=\"Tokyo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tokyo\">Tokyo<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Yokohama\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yokohama\">Yokohama<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Tohoku region\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tohoku_region\">Tohoku region<\/a>), coinciding with\u00a0<a title=\"Ch\u016bgen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ch%C5%ABgen\">Ch\u016bgen<\/a>. &#8220;Hachigatsu Bon&#8221; (Bon in August) is based on the lunar calendar, is celebrated around the 15th of August and is the most commonly celebrated time. &#8220;Kyu Bon&#8221; (Old Bon) is celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, and so differs each year. &#8220;Kyu Bon&#8221; is celebrated in areas like the northern part of the Kant\u014d region,\u00a0<a title=\"Ch\u016bgoku region\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ch%C5%ABgoku_region\">Ch\u016bgoku region<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Shikoku\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shikoku\">Shikoku<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a title=\"Ryukyu Islands\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ryukyu_Islands\">Ryukyu Islands<\/a>.
