It is held in order to congratulate and encourage all those who have reached the\u00a0<a title=\"Age of majority\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Age_of_majority\">age of majority<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>20 years old<\/strong>\u00a0(\u4e8c\u5341\u6b73\u00a0<em>hatachi<\/em>)) over the past year, and to help them realize that they have become\u00a0<a title=\"Adult\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adult\">adults<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0Japan lowered the age of adulthood in 2018 from 20 years of age to 18 which is set to take effect in 2022. This change has caused confusion on the status of the holiday, and raised concerns among the <a title=\"Kimono\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kimono\">kimono<\/a> industry which profits from the garments worn during the ceremonies.\u00a0 Festivities include <strong>coming of age ceremonies<\/strong>\u00a0(\u6210\u4eba\u5f0f\u00a0<em>seijin-shiki<\/em>)\u00a0held at local and\u00a0<a title=\"Prefecture\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prefecture\">prefectural<\/a> offices, as well as after-parties among family and friends.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coming of Age Day\u00a0(\u6210\u4eba\u306e\u65e5\u00a0Seijin no Hi)\u00a0is a\u00a0Japanese holiday\u00a0held annually on the second Monday of January.
