It commemorates the opening of the\u00a0<a title=\"1964 Summer Olympics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1964_Summer_Olympics\">1964 Summer Olympics<\/a> being held in\u00a0<a title=\"Tokyo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tokyo\">Tokyo<\/a>, and exists to promote sports and an active lifestyle.\u00a0\u00a0Many schools and businesses choose this day to hold their annual Field Day (\u904b\u52d5\u4f1a Und\u014d-kai), or sports day.
